COREPLUS INTERNSHIP PROGRAM WITH NFA IMPACTS MANY

In its sixth year the Internship program at CorePlus Federal Credit Union continues to be a unique opportunity with far reaching results. The program was conceived and developed as a partnership between Norwich Free Academy and the Credit Union. The school screens and selects the interns and monitors their progress during the 8 week program. CorePlus provides an intensive two day orientation prior to the start of the paid internship.

"The training and new skills that have become second nature to me this summer are those that I can reference later on in life," declared Shayla Johnson, one of this year’s interns going into her senior year at NFA " The program has led me to believe in my actions and gain confidence in everything I do, and that is a lesson that I was not expecting to learn but am so grateful that I have."

"The program has been so successful, most of the interns stay on with us in some capacity," said Ray Hasson the coordinator for the program at CorePlus. "Many of them are part time or temporary but we do have two full-time employees that came to us out of the original class in 2006."

One aspect of the program requires the interns to keep a written journal during the program. "Their observations and comments in the journals are given serious consideration because they’re looking at what we do from a younger, sometimes more tech savvy, view point than we normally get," explains Warren P. Scholl, CEO of CorePlus. "Our policy and procedures for checking accounts for young people is just one example of changes that have been sparked by interns."

"When I first started there were things I thought I'd never be able to do," said intern Irving Eggleston also a senior at NFA "But like I was told in orientation, I adapted."

When asked what they thought about the program, Eggleston said, "This program has taught me a lot about myself as an employee. All in all I had a great time this summer working at Coreplus and I'm looking forward to working Saturdays."

Johnson summed up her experience, "The internship was one that has had a large impact not only on my life but my overall future."
Students this year graduating are Emilia DePina, Shayla Johnson, Irving Eggleston, Tom Ha. The graduation luncheon was held at the Holiday Inn in Norwich.
